Tim Ferris made me do it – Playing with my food.

Lately I’ve been playing with my food – Tim Ferris made me do it and its all in the name of research! Welcome to my new series “Tim Ferris made me do it!” I am one of the many people out there who still hasn’t got food figured out. I know what I should eat (salad, vegetables..) but I don’t really know what my end goal is. Enter Tim Ferris and The 4 Hour Body.

In my youth, I was obsessed with fitness books. I had them all – Tracy Anderson’s 30 day method (good for getting a dancers body, without being a dancer), The Ballet Beautiful book (good for ballerina wannabe’s), and even Charlotte Crosby’s Live Fast Lose weight (some good recipes surprisingly!) . I read them purely for ideas and entertainment value. I was skinny and ate what I wanted.

Now I’m older and more concerned about age proofing my body opposed to looking thin. The 4 Hour Body is different. I’m currently re-reading it for the millionth time.

Why am I so obsessed with this book whilst the others gather dust on my bookshelf? Its a combination of pure insanity and sheer genius at the same time. I’ve also decided to take the plunge and embark on my own food and fitness revolution.

I’m not going to divulge the inner workings of the book here. It would be boring and disrespectful to the author. You can also read most of it on Tim’s blog here.

The 4 Hour Body is basically about turning everything you thought you knew about food, fitness, fat and even muscle into question. Even the humble calorie is ripped to shreds, which is great to get you thinking about your own lifestyle.

I had never really heard of Tim Ferris. Mr Fire often mentioned him and his podcast in conversation. I was interested in him but never really took it any further. Last year for Mr Fire’s birthday I bought him The 4 Hour Body and The 4 Hour Work Week:

I confess Mr Fire doesn’t really have time to read and I was fascinated. How could anyone make real changes to their body in a mere four hours a week? I started by reading the back. Then the cover. Next came a page a day. Before I knew it, I was devouring the book!

The thing I love about the book is Tim questions EVERYTHING! He even encourages the reader to question him!

My Harajuku Moment

I’m not going to lie. I’m not fat. I’ve never been fat. My moment isn’t based on some electrifying revelation or fear of death. Its based purely on my selfishness to have it all. I want to eat whatever I want, and not get fat. I want my body to be strong but I hate lifting weights for hours at the gym. I want to look 40 when I’m 70.

My Vision

I’m a foodie and I love it. I spent years restricting myself, obsessing over food. I WONT do it again. I’m going to create an easy to follow food and fitness plan that will allow we to have the body I want, whilst eating what I want. I’m not aspiring to binge on McDonald’s all day. Nor do I wish to look like a Victoria Secret model. I’m talking realistically!

Here are my rules:

  1. Fitness has to be sustainable and enjoyable.
    No 500 calorie spinning classes.
  2. Everything needs to be measurable.
    No guess work ever. I want to treat this like an experiment. If I gain weight then so be it. I’m actually so passionate about being able to measure my progress, we invested in these scales  that measure body fat as well as weight. 
  3. It must be in my best interest.
    Starvation or binge eating is not an option. This isn’t a diet or a fitness routine. Its a blueprint for life.

  1. I’m a low carb fan which has meant that at aged 50 I am thinner than I have been my entire adult life. In reality, it’s an eat lots of veggies diet, which is cheap as well as good for you. In terms of exercise I do a little bit of jogging, mainly on my treadmill in front of YouTube and try to get to a local pilates class once a week which is hopefully going to ensure I keep strong as I get older.

    I think that any focus on your health and wellbeing is a positive thing. I look forward to hearing how you get on.

      WOW thats amazing! Do you eat lots of pulses? I only ask as Tim Ferris recommends filling up with beans instead of carbs. I’m not really a fan of pulses.

      I love the fact that you jog and watch YouTube videos!

  2. Running is my favoured form of exercise. I’m in a couple of running clubs and I have a great group of friends that I run with. Even when I don’t feel like running( pretty much all the time) I show up to meet my friends, get to spend time with some great people and feel amazing afterwards. I’ve not got the eating side of things sorted yet as I’m a big comfort eater, but I think I get away with a lot as I run so much.
    You’re so right that things need to be sustainable. I used to do the 5:2 diet, which was great for keeping the weight off, but no way to live your life.

      That’s a great tip about a running club. I’ve not mastered running yet – I can speed walk pretty well though 🙂

      Mr Fire is looking into the 5:2 diet but I don’t think it sounds sustainable for our life really.
